Globe Artichokes

Artichoke: Able to remain fresh for up to two weeks, Artichokes can be stored away until needed. Artichokes are very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. They’re also a very good source of Dietary Fibre and Vitamin C. At the market, look for artichokes with closed heads, and the leaves should form tight, compact layers. The whole Artichoke should be firm and feel heavy for its size.

Serving suggestion: Artichoke petals can be spread out on a serving platter and topped with refried beans, onion, tomato and sour cream for low calorie yet delicious nachos.

Quirky fact: When fully grown, an Artichoke plant can spread nine feet in diameter and stand about five feet tall, and one plant can produce over 20 Artichokes a year.

About the Markets of Melbourne: The Markets of Melbourne is a collective between three of Melbourne’s longest running cultural icons- Prahran Market, Queen Victoria Market and South Melbourne Market. We aim to raise the profile of market shopping amongst Melbournians and educate and inform about the benefits associated with shopping at your local market.
